The evening primrose (Oenothera biennis) is native to North America, but has been found everywhere in Europe since the 17th century. The oil from the seeds contains around 9% gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). This unsaturated fatty acid plays an important role in important metabolic processes, especially in the skin. The body container normally produce sufficient amounts of GLA from linoleic acid, which is ingested with food. GLA is then converted into other important endogenous signaling substances.
